Posture Do’s and Dont’s: Are you Sitting Correctly?

postureI sit at a computer and desk all day long.  Anywhere from thrity to forty hours a week.  I’ve been noticing myself slouching a little bit, so I brought in my excercise ball and started to sit on it.  I had noticed that my neck, back and shoulders were getting sore when I was going home at night.  When you’re sitting at a desk, typing on a computer, you tend to slouch your shoulders, head and neck forwards.  Not good!  So, I had my friend, Heather Hixon, a therapist at Time to Unwind Yoga and Massage come in and give me some help ful hints that I’m lpassing along to you.  I’m also going to through in a few awesome stretching directions.

The Desk Posture DON’T:

1.  Try to sit up straight.  Fix your eyes on the screen.

2.  Lift your shoulders when typing or clicking your mouse.

3. Lower your neck as you try to read the screen.

DO!

1.  Check the positioning of your screen.  Make sure to have your chair at a height where your eyes are level with the screen, your knees are bently slightly lower than your hips.

2.  You should let your wrists rest on your desk.

3. Let your feet sit flat on the floor and not tucked under your chair.

4.  Kepp your shoulders back and relaxed.

5.  TAKE BREAKS AND WALK AROUND!

Also,  take a towel and roll it up into a log shape and put it at the back of the seat of your chair.  When you sit down, put your rear at the edge of your rolled up towl.  This will make you lean forward slightly, hence making you sit up a tad staighter.  If you can rememeber to try to breath from your diaphram, deep in your core, this will also make you want to sit up straighter.  When I was young, I was always told to try to walk across the room acting like I had a book on top of my head.  So, while you’re sitting at your desk, picture yourself trying to balance a book on your crown.  Or if you’re bored, really balance a book on your head!

Thanks,

Tiffany

I use the work out ball at work too! Just be careful not to sit on it too often! My trainer says that you can over work and strain your core. But it really is great for improving posture! great blog and advice…thanks!
