There are many types of massage available today. You can read about the different types on LastMinuteMassage.com. Here is a quick summary about Swedish Massage;

Among numerous ways of relaxing one’s body and mind affected by the stressful life, the most
popular option is the Swedish massage. There is somewhat confusion as to its origin but the most
commonly accepted originator is the Swedish medical-gymnastic practitioner Per Henrik Ling. Though
famous as Swedish massage world over, yet in Sweden it’s simply referred to as “classic massage”.

The Swedish massage at the very basic level aims to increase the flow of oxygen in the blood and also helps release harmful toxins from the muscles. Through
the application of gentle but firm pressure applied through palms, hands, fingers, etc. the massage eases muscle aches, enhances circulation and improves relaxation. It’s found to be the most effective method for quick recovery from any kind of muscular strain.

The Swedish massage plays an important role in not just stimulating skin and tendons but soothes your whole nervous system. It’s of immense help to people involved in physically demanding activities like sportspersons as it flushes the muscles of all the toxins including lactic acid and uric acid.

The Techniques involved in Swedish Massage

In spite of the issues related to its origin, there are no doubts about the five/six techniques/styles employed in the Swedish massage that carry French names given by Dutch practitioner Johan Georg Mezger.

The basic approach of giving the Swedish massage involves the ‘draping’ technique. The process involves covering one part of the body with a sheet and massaging the uncovered part. Then moving along the whole body can be massaged thoroughly. The massage therapists make use of the massage oil as lubricant to smoothen the process of massaging.

There are six different techniques named by Johan Mezger that are utilized in offering the Swedish massage.

  1. Effleurage: involves long and light gliding strokes. The therapist makes use of his/her palms, thumbs and/or fingertips. It helps connect one part of the body to others.
  2. Petrissage: involves lifting, rolling and kneading of individual muscles so as to free up knotted muscles. The biggest advantage of it is that it ensures deeper and more penetrating effects of the massage.
  3. Tapotement: includes the brisk striking, tapping and percussion movements in a rhythmic fashion. Its main purpose is to stimulate the nerves, muscles and circulation through the tapping with sides of hands thus energizing that particular area.
  4. Friction: involves firm and deep rubbing in circular motion to generate heat that relaxes the muscle and prepares the tissue for more deep work. The therapist makes use of palms of hands, thumbs and/or fingers.
  5. Vibration: involves oscillatory rocking movements that are employed to shake either some particular muscle or the entire body. The therapist makes use of heel or side of hands and fingertips.
  6. Traction: involves pulling the muscles of the body including arms, legs and the head. It forms part of the whole massage routine and helps stretch the muscle.

The Swedish massage helps relax the body as well as the mind. It improves circulation and relaxes the body muscles. It reduces the stress and accompanying pain. It revitalizes your whole nervous system.

Swedish massage is considered to be the basis for other types like Western massage, aromatherapy, sports massage and deep tissue massage. It has various medical uses and is usually made part of stress management programs. If you would like to book a discounted massage today, go to www.lastminutemassage.com and search for last minute specials.
